The John F. Nicoll Pipe Band is passionately committed to encouraging the next generation of quality bagpipers and drummers. To that end, the band provides free instruction to dedicated individuals interested in learning the bagpipes and Scottish style drumming who intend to join our band upon successful completion of the course of instruction. Bagpipe instruction follows the course outlined in the College of Piping Tutor Book 1. Drumming instruction focuses on developing the proper rudiments and learning the massed band drum settings.
Individual bagpipe instruction is given prior to full band practices, each Thursday evening from 6 - 7pm. Drumming instruction is given during Thursday evening practices from 7 - 8pm. Practices are held at the Towson American Legion Hall, 125 York Road, Towson, MD 21204.
Learning to play any musical instrument is a long process that should not be taken lightly. Becoming a piper or drummer in the band is no different. The development of good technique is paramount to becoming a good musician. The John F. Nicoll Pipe Band is dedicated to providing the instruction necessary for students to maintain the high standard of playing that the band is known for. In addition to learning the instrument, our students begin marching drill instruction immediately and are encouraged to join the band's Colour Party in order to gain marching confidence and performance experience.
Prospective students are encouraged to attend a practice session to discuss the process of instruction and commitment level necessary for success.
